A real Hammer story which is an oral history detailing the fascinating biographies of Hammer's key players, many telling their stories for the first time in interviews.

Hammer Films The Unsung Heroes Wayne Kinsey 9780955767081 Books

Comprehensive behind the scenes look at the artisans and creative folk that worked behind the scenes on Hammer films. Has many great sections... my favorite one was the section on production design. Very well written. This book may not appeal to casual readers because it is really in depth. I personally loved it. Many photos are reproduced, but the majority are small and black and white. Would have loved bigger photos but that would have made this a 2000+ page book! The writer did a great job and it’s obvious there’s great passion in him for the output of this classic movie studio. Highly recommended.

Hammer Films The Unsung Heroes Wayne Kinsey 9780955767081 Books Reviews

When I heard about this book, I was more than a little skeptical. Even though I had really enjoyed Wayne Kinsey's previous books on Hammer, I thought, "what could there possibly be left to tell?". That, coupled with the fact that the vast majority of people who worked for Hammer are sadly no longer around to share their memories. Also, how could a book on Hammer possibly work without the inclusion of iconic actors such as Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Barbara Shelley, and Ingrid Pitt? The lesson here is never to underestimate Wayne Kinsey. This book is amazing.
The author seems to have steered clear of the word "encyclopedia" here, but that is precisely what this is. But if the term encyclopedia implies a cold, dry, clinical gathering of information, don't be put off because this book is the complete opposite. Kinsey relies on the actual people involved to supply an oral history of what happened at Hammer. The results are not only an astonishingly factual account, but the warmest, most human telling of Hammer's history we've had thus far.
What is equally astonishing are the sheer number of people included. From the usual suspects (Carreras, Hinds, et al) through to the carpenters, electricians, plasterers, cooks, secretaries, and switchboard operators. They're all here and accounted for. It's barely an exaggeration to say that if you were employed by Hammer for 2 weeks in 1955, you are at least mentioned if not interviewed. If this sounds like overkill, I assure you it's not. Sometimes it's people like secretaries who really see it all and have the most vivid memories.
The book is divided into chapters according to a person's job description and reads in a very organized fashion. Due to this non-linear approach to story telling, you can open the book anywhere and begin reading. I really enjoy this aspect.
The photo selection is staggering. According to the back cover, 1,000 photos are included, and the fact that almost all of them are extremely rare and seldom if ever published is a pure delight.
One of my personal favorite chapters is a history of the actual studios used by Hammer, in particular Bray. The "tour" of the studio's history and physicality far surpasses any thing previously published. Really terrific job.
Even if you're like me and have collected magazines and books on Hammer for years, this book is still a must. I would even say if you're not a horror fan but a fan of Post-War British Cinema, this book is also for you.
My highest compliments and gratitude go out to Wayne Kinsey and Tomahawk Press for providing us with this extraordinary book. Thanks and job well done!
Highly recommended for the total Hammer FIlms fanatic.
This book is a gold mine of information. Definitely a must for every film lover's library, especially if you're a Hammer Films fan. However beware. I bought it used and it was listed "Like New". When I received the book I was surprised at how ratted the cover and a few pages were. "Like New", yeah, right. Anyhow, the info is worth 5 stars so I'm giving it that.
Wayne Kinsey has written a number of books on Britain's Hammer Films, but this one may be his best. "Hammer Films-The Unsung Heroes The Team Behind the Legend" features profiles of dozens of behind-the-camera technicians and employees of the famed company. Unlike just about every other book on Hammer, this one does not deal with the individual films or the on-camera talent. Mr. Kinsey's purpose is to spotlight men and women who worked at every aspect of Hammer Film production--producers, writers, editors, cameramen, FX artists, art directors, etc. The result is a fresh look at one of the most famous names in classic horror film history. Tons of interveiws are quoted, and there are hundreds of rare photographs. There are some great images of Bray Studios, Hammer's main home for a number of years. The book has an eight-page color photo section.

What's great about this volume is that a number of people who worked for Hammer finally get their stories told. Kinsey even profiles the family who provided Hammer with the horses and coaches that were used many times in the films!

The book checks in at almost 500 pages. Some may be put off by the fact that this is more of an "ultimate insider" book than a typical look at Hammer, but if you are a serious, hardcore Hammer Films fanatic, this is a must.
