Everyone should visit Fred at least once in their life—not necessarily the town itself, but the books that Whittington sets in that singular locale. Fred provides the perfect backdrop for teenage Preacher's Kid Mark Cloud to work out his faith in fear and trembling (especially near the pharisaical Deacon Fry).
This is Whittington's fourth trip back to Fred, and it's a worthwhile road to take. For this reviewer, the book really picked up steam after Cloud started using his gifts of wit and verse to help other teens in dire straits with their significant others, but that's just one part of a much larger story regarding Cloud's prodigal cousin.
"Postcards" is funny and poignant and an excellent addition to the Fred oeuvre.

Readers of all ages will find something to hang on to in this one. The turbulent early 70s, wandering (and wondering) youth, urban vs. rural, moral vs. amoral. Mark Cloud drags you through his Johari Window, breaking a few panes in the process. While Postcards serves as a sidebar to the Fred Trilogy, it's a worthwhile diversion and gives additional insight into the development of Mark as a Practicing Christian. Most of us remember hearing a voice of reason while growing up. Mark's trust in his dad's North Star gave him a leg up on all the young dudes. What would Jesus do on a date, indeed! Two things struck me after returning from East Texas. First, I don't recall having such elaborate trains of thought flash through my mind while passing through adolescence. Second, this PK got a lot more action then I ever did in school. I should have learned to play the guitar.
I'll say "ditto" to all the kudos for "Postcards From Fred. It is a fine read and a worthwhile continuation of the previous "Fred" books. I realized about half way through "Postcards" one of the main reasons I like this series so much. A somewhat heated discussion I had about a very popular TV show set the stage for my Eureka moment. Said show, I admitted, is well-written and well-acted - but I don't watch it because I don't want to spend an hour of my life every week with such awful people. A short time later I was turning a page of "Postcards" and it dawned on me that I love spending time with Mark Cloud, his family, friends - and even most of his nemeses. I'm looking forward to going back to #1. (Maybe there will even be a #5?)
I enjoyed every book in this series. The book takes you through the life of a preacher's kid and his family from the time he is around 10 yrs old until he is a grown man. The author's style is engaging, witty, and touching. The story is peopled with characters you can relate to and the author makes Jesus an active participant without sugarcoating what doing what Jesus would do can cost you or making God a big Santa type figure. It also deals with church conflict in a gently yet realistic way. I recommend this series of books to anyone dealing with trying to find authentic relationships in church. This book was my favorite one but the entire series is great.
I felt like I was just rereading Book 2 but with girl problems inserted in the timeline. In book 2 he graduated from high school at the end, now all of a sudden he's back in high school but with a girlfriend and wild cousin living in the house. I like the books but just didn't care for this one or how the books aren't chronologically consistent.
Mark meets a beautiful, blonde, PK, Anna, and ponders "The One,. Claire, a rebel cousin, comes to live in Fred with the Fox family and introduces some interesting dynamics with her unorthodox views and life. I didn't realize that this books existed between "Living..." and "Escape..." and wish I had read it in sequence. Still not bad. Whittington continues with a consistent logical character development. Claire's introduction adds some meaningful and needed conflict and companionship. Accurately portrays the 'glass house' existence in a small town, especially for a pastor and his family. It can be a source of comfort as well as a source of suffering.
I was pleasantly surprised to find another volume telling the tales of Mark Cloud and his family. I grew up in the same time period as these books are set in, so all four were a real treat to read for me, even though I'm a "Yankee" thru and thru.
Postcards from Fred is the fourth book written, but it takes place third chronologically in these delightful, touching books. I found them to be witty (hysterical at times), yet they all had insights for us all to learn from. I finished Postcards in less than two days, like I did with the other three Fred books. Thanks, Brad, for treating your fans with another little slice of Fred.
This is my second Fred book, and since it's number 4 it's clearly out of sequence... But it didn't matter. Even if there were others before it I don't feel as though I came in at the middle. It was a fine stand-alone book.
Funny...very funny. I'm so glad I read this today. I needed something light.
I love the dialog of this teenage boy. I love that it's clean humor. I love the situations and the things learned without the reader feeling preached at...not that I mind preaching... It's just that sometimes it becomes trite and over done.
Mark Cloud is such a likable kid...someone I would have hung around as a teenager.
The author has an amazing way of describing things that just makes you giggle. You can't help but enjoy this book. I couldn't recommend it more! It's was just plain fun.
