A novelette of 15,000 words. It is April of 1924. Colossus Films (of the novel Bride of the Rat-God) is shooting in Reno, because their male star, Tor Westlake, is getting his fifth divorce in order to marry Chrysanda (Christine) Flamande, the studio’s #1 starlet. They are filming at the supposedly-haunted castle on the outskirts of town, built by a Gold Rush millionaire, and sharing the sets with a black film company from Chicago, whose female star is also getting a divorce from her abusive husband. Tor wants to hold a séance in the haunted castle, but Norah – Christine’s sister-in-law and dog-minder – is uneasy. Christine’s dogs are conscious of supernatural activity, and there’s something about their reactions to the castle that doesn’t seem right to her.

This is a "further adventures of" the cast of Bride of the Rat God. If you haven't read Bride of the Rat God, stop reading this review and buy that book. The only reason to give Bride five stars is the system doesn't allow six.Back already? OK, you should read "Bride" first, but that's no hardship. This is a pleasant lighter tale set a few months later with much the same cast--mostly people I'm happy to spend an evening with. It's well researched, decently plotted and filled with people real enough to reach out and touch. It's four stars instead of five because it lacks a little of the depth Hambly gives her novels, and because she's set one relationship back a notch. /sequels are a little prone to that. But I don't regret the price for a moment.

Castle of Horror eBook Barbara Hambly Reviews
I loved Barbara Hambly's novel "Bride of the Rat God," and I was thrilled to find a new adventure for the characters from that book. Hoping for more to come!
I've just finished Bride for the umpteenth time, so it was lovely to see a continuation. As ever, Hambly combines a vivid background, sympathetic characters, and a few plot twists into a cracking good yarn.
There are definitely ghosts here, also, and the Pekingese are lovely.
My only complaint is that the ending zipped by a little quickly. I find myself oddly taken with Tor's fluffy leggings.
I just love Hambly's "Further Adventures of", and this is the first continuation of the single story, Bride of the Rat God. Set in the golden age of cinema, the antics of the flamboyant actress Christine, her steady assistant Norah, and her Pekes delight and amuse.
Happiness is an unexpected reunion with really old friends. the story was good (i'm not much for short stories generally), the time period was excellent! the research was flawless. thank you Barbara Hambly.
I retrreadvBride of the Rat God several times. Ms. Ha' historical details on silent movie making and Chinese history are so detailed that I always found things I had missed. Also Nora and Alex are both intriguing and worthy protagonists. I hoped for a sequel and finally this short story was published. Although short, the history and mystery were excellently handled. I hope Ms. Humbly will continue writing about these individuals and the silent movies.
What the other reviewers said. I enjoyed reading more about Norah (whom I would be delighted to meet) and Chrysanda (a hot mess best appreciated from a safe distance). Ms. Hambly has a fine sense of irony about human foibles, and, I believe, a seething anger about real cruelty and injustice. But the novelette is plain fun.
First off, I loved "Bride of the Rat God." It's probably my favorite Hambly because it so deftly combines subtle humor and horror. I thought the price of this novella a little steep, but the story itself is solid. It is a mood piece and a whodunnit with very little supernatural content. It was nice to see the Peeks, Nora, Christine, and Alec again. I do wish Hambly had resolved the real haunting at the boarding house. That just gets dropped on the floor.
